Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal 2025: Prof. Dr. Andreas Mulch

The German Mineralogical Society (Deutsche Minerlaogische Gesellschaft, DMG) awards Prof. Dr. Andreas Mulch the Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal for his groundbreaking mineralogical work on mountain formation and terrestrial paleoclimate reconstruction, particularly with the aid of modern, innovatively developed geochemical analysis methods.

As a personality, scientist and teacher, Andreas Mulch is shaping the next generation of geoscientists thanks to his mineralogically based understanding of systems.

Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Prize 2025: Dr. Martin Kutzschbach

Dr. Martin Kutzschbach receives the Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Prize from the German Mineralogical Society (Deutsche Minerlaogische Gesellschaft, DMG) for his experimental work on the synthesis of tourmaline, the analysis of boron isotope fractionation, and its petrological application.

He has demonstrated how the element boron is incorporated into the structure of tourmaline at the tetrahedral position and what consequences this has for the isotope fractionation of 10B/11B. In the field of analytics, he focuses on laser ablation with reaction cell mass spectroscopy.

Beate Mocek Prize 2025: Iris Arndt

Iris Arndt receives the Beate Mocek Prize from the German Mineralogical Society (Deutsche Minerlaogische Gesellschaft, DMG) for her work in the field of geochemical analysis for seasonal paleoenvironmental reconstruction: Geochemical isotope and element measurements on giant clams enable precise conclusions to be drawn about the paleoenvironment in the late Miocene.

Her innovative project has the potential to significantly advance research in the field of paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Her commitment to promoting women in the geosciences is also particularly noteworthy.

Beate Mocek Prize 2024: Jie D. Xu

Jie Dodo Xu has been working on boron isotope analysis since her master's degree in Beijing. Since October 2020 she has been writing her dissertation on boron isotope fractionation in subduction zones with FIERCE. Her first publications describe, among other things, the in situ analysis of boron isotopes in tourmalines and micas.

She developed a method for measuring boron isotope ratios and trace element concentrations for micro-pellet samples with low boron contents in situ using a laser ablation split-stream system (LA-SF-ICPMS) published as FIERCE #164. In the next step of her dissertation, she extended the method to nano-pellets, as it has been found that micro-pellets can be inhomogeneous. The goal was to measure boron isotope fractionation in subduction zones directly on the samples, rather than determining it empirically as had been done in the past. She used the prize money to purchase the equipment needed to produce and measure the nano-pellets and published her work as FIERCE#181 and FIERCE #188.

With her high level of self-confidence and curiosity, her seemingly boundless motivation, and her conscientious work in the laboratory, Jie Dodo Xu convinced the DMG committee (Deutsche Minerlaogische Gesellschaft, German Mineralogical Society) to award her the 2024 Beate Mocek Prize.
